The design and construction of West Coast station on the Cross Island Line (CRL) will be undertaken by Gamuda Berhad Singapore Branch. The Land Transport Authority (LTA) announced yesterday that it has awarded the civil contract, worth approximately $510 million in value, to the company.
The contract also covers the design and construction of tunnels under Phase 2 of the CRL (CRL2). Construction works for the CRL West Coast station are expected to start in the first quarter of 2024. Whereas, passenger service for the CRL2 is targeted to commence in 2032.
This is the third civil contract following the two that were awarded for the CRL King Albert Park and Clementi interchange stations back in October.
Gamuda Berhad has an established track record in infrastructure and residential projects locally and abroad. At present, the company is involved in the design and construction of CRL Defu station and tunnels, as well as the Gali Batu Bus Depot.
CRL West Coast Station will be an underground station located along West Coast Road. As it is in proximity to residential and commercial buildings, necessary traffic and utilities diversion works will be implemented in phases to mitigate impact to residents and other stakeholders.
The CRL is Singapore's eighth and fully underground MRT line. It will serve existing and future developments in the eastern, north-eastern and western corridors. The CRL will also link major hubs such as the Jurong Lake District, Punggol Digital District and Changi region.
Almost half of CRL stations serve as interchanges with other rail lines. This way, commuters will find it easier and more convenient to make transfers and travel across the rail network. Commuters can look forward to time savings of up to 40 minutes across the island to and from the CRL West Coast station.
The construction of the CRL is being carried out in three phases. Announced in 2019, CRL Phase 1 is 29 kilometres long, and comprises 12 stations from Aviation Park to Bright Hill. As of March 2022, all civil contracts for CRL Phase 1 had been awarded. Construction works have commenced and are expected to complete by 2030.
CRL Phase 2, announced in September 2022, is approximately 15 kilometres and comprises six underground stations - Turf City, King Albert Park, Maju, Clementi, West Coast and Jurong Lake District.
Meanwhile, engineering studies for the CRL Phase 3 are still ongoing. LTA said it will share more details after these studies are completed.
