The Sunday Times reported that car showrooms were abuzz on Saturday with prospective buyers, many of whom were driven by a looming change in the Certificate Of Entitlement (COE) category system.
Human traffic was particularly heavy at showrooms for European makes such as Volkswagen, Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Volvo, with car salesmen saying they attended to significantly more people.
A car buyer who wanted to be known only as Mr. Leow explained why he decided to fork out $206,000 for a Cat B Volkswagen Sharan that comes with a 2.0-litre diesel engine yesterday. "I foresee that when Cat B gets more crowded, the COE price is going to increase," said the 53-year old businessman.
Once the domain of smaller, mass-market cars, Cat A has seen the entry of higher-end European cars such as the Mercedes-Benz C180 in recent years. However, Mercedes-Benz and BMW will have to exit Cat A entirely by next February, while Volkswagen and Volvo also have several popular models that will have to be shifted to Cat B.
