Hold on to your horsepowers (or kilowatts, in this case), because there's a new electric hatchback in town. And if you happened to be plodding around VivoCity on the late evening of 16 April 2026, you'd have been one of the lucky few to have witnessed the official launch of the MG4 Urban in our little red dot.
While many may still remember the rear-wheel driven MG4 EV of old, it's worth pointing out first and foremost that the MG4 Urban is built on an entirely new cell-to-body platform.
In essence, this advanced architecture sees the battery cells integrated as part of the car's chassis, promising not just weight savings and increased body rigidity (for improved handling and driving pleasure), but also maximised interior space too. In fact, the latter is exactly what MG is highlighting most strongly about the MG4 Urban.
Interestingly, the move to a cell-to-body platform doesn't just make the MG4 Urban the first model in MG Singapore's model range, but also one of the first compact segment EVs to utilise such an architecture. Additionally, the car is now front-wheel driven.
Touted as the brand's all-new entry-level model, the MG4 Urban sports most exterior features that seem pretty standard of cars nowadays. This includes integrated LED daytime running lights, LED rear lights and centre brake lights, 17-inch alloy wheels, and an active grille system, to name a few. Oh, and the headlamps are noticeably slimmer than the MG4 EV.
Notably, the little hatch's design is reminiscent of the MG Cyberster, especially with its rounded and low hood, as well as its arrow-shaped taillights.
Ventilated front seats offer comfort for both driver and passenger, while a 12.8-inch touchscreen supports seamless connectivity
As mentioned earlier, however, the real highlight of the car is in its comfort and practicality, which it does quite well.
First off, don't be fooled by its measurements. With a wheelbase of 2,744mm, the MG4 Urban does offer a lot more space than its size assumes. And with a whopping 480 litres of boot space that can go up to 1,364 litres with the rear seats folded down - both class-leading figures for an electric hatchback - this model is able to meet most of what is asked of it.
Inside, both the front passenger and driver benefit from ventilated seats (a must in our tropical climate) that are upholstered in vegan leather, with four- and six-way electrical adjustment respectively. A 12.8-inch HD infotainment touchscreen offers both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, while a 7.0-inch HD Driver Display shows real-time vehicle and driving information.
The MG4 Urban is equipped with the MG Pilot driver assistance suite as well as a 360° parking camera
The MG4 Urban also offers a place to wirelessly charge smartphones, found among its centre console that offers over 30 interior storage points, which should benefit those of us with a preference for stringent categorisation. The cabin already feels spacious and airy as things stand - especially if you opt for the Sky Grey interior (a Dark Grey option is also available) - but a panoramic glass roof promises to brighten it even further, while still coming with a much-appreciated electric sunshade.
The MG4 Urban doesn't skimp on safety either, as it comes equipped with the MG Pilot driver assistance suite.
This consists of features such as front collision assist, lane departure and lane change assist, adaptive cruise control, rear collision warning, one-pedal driving, blind spot detection, driver fatigue warning, and driver distraction monitoring, to name a few. Most importantly, perhaps, it also comes with a 360° parking camera to ease the anxiety of those of us whose parking require more adjustments than a beleaguered tailor.
The MG4 Urban also comes with a full complement of seven airbags, comprising two up front, curtain airbags at the side, and even a central one between the driver and front passenger.
Like most entry-level models, the MG4 Urban's power output allows it to be eligible for a Cat A COE. A single motor on its front axle delivers a power output of 99kW and 250Nm of torque. And with a century sprint timing of 9.6 seconds, its not exactly slow off the start either.
Range is definitely not a problem for the MG4 Urban either; its 54kWh battery offers a combined WLTP range of 405km, while its WLTP city range stretches up to a class-leading 586km thanks to a claimed efficiency of 15.5kWh/100km. And by offering a maximum DC charging rate of 82kW, the battery is able to recharge from 10-80% in 30 minutes.
480 litres of boot space in the MG4 Urban can be expanded to 1,364 litres with the rear seats folded down
The MG4 Urban will also be available in seven colours - this includes the new signature Sage Green - as well as a choice of two interior colours: Dark Grey and Sky Grey.
MG Singapore will be offering this all-new electric hatchback at a starting price of $168,888 (with COE), which comes with one year of free road tax, 500kWh worth of Shell Recharge credits, and $500 in MG Care vouchers.
