"We are proud C-MAX Energi is the first plug-in hybrid that can deliver a 550-mile (885km) overall range and more than 20 miles (32km) of electric range as it gives customers great flexibility to commute to work, then take off for a road trip while passing many gas stations along the way. C-MAX Energi is a great symbol for the leading fuel economy we're delivering across our lineup to give customers the power of choice to save money at the pump," explains John Davis, chief nameplate engineer for Ford's compact cars and utility vehicles.
While the technology and model is primarily aimed at the North American market, the technology involved is impressive and it just demonstrates how far hybrids have progressed through the ages. Expect Ford to port over a similar technology to their global fleet.
Aiming straight at the hybrid poster boy, the Toyota Prius, the new Ford C-MAX Energi is not your average hybrid car. It contains an electric only range of more than 32km and an astonishing 885km overall range. It also rolls faster in all electric mode than a Prius plug-in and delivers 40.3km/L combined city/highway fuel economy. C-MAX Energi is a plug in hybrid with a large Lithium-ion battery pack that are lighter, more efficient and powerful than nickel-metal hydride batteries that also take lesser time to charge.
The Ford C-MAX Energi not only offers class leading efficiency, but has 50bhp more power than a Prius plug-in hybrid. C-MAX Energi has a combined 188bhp output from engine and electric motor. When powered by petrol, the C-MAX Energi uses 2.0-litre Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder engine. Amenities include hands-free liftgate and active park assist for easy parking.
