After all the teasing, Lamborghini has officially unveiled the Urus crossover concept. Named after a large, wild ancestor of domestic cattle, the Urus is a spiritual successor to, the rugged military-spec crossover Lamborghini LM002, released back in 1985.
The first modern four door, four-seater Lamborghini is projected for use as a family car with trademark Lamborghini styling. A prominent front fascia, a ventilated hood and LED headlights complements the rear spoiler, rear diffuser and quad exhausts. Other highlights include an adjustable suspension and 24-inch wheels with a matte aluminum finish. The Urus will be considerably lighter than its competitors with a height adjustable front spoiler for height clearance, and stability at high speeds when lowered which works with the rear adjustable spoiler for better aerodynamics and handling. TFT screens replace exterior mirrors in a bid to aid aerodynamics, though this might be a concept gimmick.
Its comparable to a BMW X6, stretching to 4990mm in length, a width of 1990mm and a height of 1660mm rather than a bulky Land Rover. The Urus will share the same platform as the Bentley EXP 9 F and next generation VW Touareg, Porsche Cayenne and Audi Q7.
“Our studies have shown that nearly all existing Lamborghini owners also have a sport utility vehicle in their garage, so in this respect we consider it the perfect extension to our existing supercar business,” said Lamborghini president Stephan Winkelmann. The cabin is equipped with leather upholstery, a programmable instrument cluster and carbon fibre composites originally seen on the Sesto Elemento concept, with touchscreen infotainment systems for the front and rear passengers. Lamborghini says the seats are lower than any other crossover and contains a focused cockpit with everything incorporated into the multi-function steering wheel or central console leaving only paddle shifters at the steering wheel for the driver.
Powered by an undisclosed front-mounted engine that produces close to 600hp, it is connected to a dual-clutch transmission and a permanent all-wheel drive system. This enables the Urus to have the lowest CO2 emissions in its class. Mr Winkelmann also explained the Urus to be a very concrete idea for the future of Lamborghini. He mentioned the Urus perfectly complements the range Lamborghini currently offers, and added, the Urus to be the most extreme interpretation of an SUV.
While it is not confirmed if the Urus would go into production, it is expected the Urus would expand Lamborghini’s customer base by large with potential sales from buyers in China, Russia, the Middle East and the United States. Lamborghini expects to sell 3,000units annually.
We are just glad it looks better than what Bentley pulled off with its EXP9-F and we were just wondering, if Lamborghini wanted a family car isn’t the Estoque concept a better choice that a coupe crossover? How will it hold up against the Maserati Kubang, the Audi Q7, and to a certain extent the Range Rover Evoque?
