Lamborghini Squadra Corse has unveiled the new SC63 at the Goodwood Festival of Speed.
The hybrid endurance racing prototype is set to compete in the Hypercar class of the 2024 FIA World Endurance Championship, including the 24 Hours of Le Mans, and in the GTP class of the IMSA WeatherTech Sports Car Championship Endurance Cup, comprising classic races such as the 24 Hours of Daytona and 12 Hours of Sebring.
Powering the new SC63 is an all-new, 3.8-litre turbocharged V8 which is paired with a hybrid system, delivering a total system output which is limited by race regulations to 670bhp. This engine utilises a 'cold V' configuration, with the turbochargers set outside the vee angle of the engine for easier cooling.
Lamborghini additionally states that this layout was chosen to lower the centre of gravity of the car, which, combined with the vehicle's aerodynamic balance and available tyre grip, is said to be the best configuration to deliver consistent speed over the many laps of an endurance race.
The car's gearbox, battery, and motor generator unit are all specified by the LMDh ruleset, a move chosen to keep development costs for the prototypes contained.
The bodywork of the Lamborghini SC63, meanwhile, has been designed by the firm's Centro Stile design department, in conjunction with the race design team. Lamborghini points out that since only one body kit configuration is allowed, with only minimal race-to-race changes allowed, the body of the SC63 had been designed considering worst-case scenarios - including high ambient temperatures - to effectively manage the thermal output of the car.
The Lamborghini SC63 will run in Verde Mantis green, with a black Nero Noctis strip over the cabin, front hood, carbon diffuser, rear fin and wing. The car also gets the green, white and red Italian Tricolore colours, and will carry the branding of Swiss watch manufacturer Roger Dubuis.
