Expect quieter traffic and bus rides come December 2024!
The LTA has announced that it has awarded its first large-scale contracts for new electric buses as well as the charging systems that will support these buses.
The authority has purchased a total of 240 electric three-door single deck buses from BYD (Singapore) Pte. Ltd as well as 120 three-door single deck buses to Cycle & Carriage Automotive Pte. Limited.
These new electric buses will come equipped with a passenger information display system to provide commuters with audio and visual information about their journey, an integrated closed-circuit television (CCTV)-collision warning system, a driver anti-fatigue system, as well as a tyre pressure monitoring system.
These buses will be progressively deployed for passenger service come December 2024, and will replace diesel buses that are reaching the end of the statutory lifespan. The LTA states that criteria including the tenderer's experience, track record, technical specifications of the proposed bus and compliance with local regulations, were all factored into its evaluation. The contracts also include an option to procure up to 60 more electric buses if needed.
The LTA states that the tender submissions for both the buses were evaluated based on a two-envelope process which saw it first conducting its quality evaluation, before the price envelopes from the tenderers were opened. It states that this two-envelop process ensures that the contracts were awarded to tenderers with high-quality and value-for-money proposals.
The authority also awarded contracts to Busways Pte Ltd/ Shell Singapore Pte Ltd Consortium to build electric vehicle charging systems in bus depots at Sengkang West and East Coast. While Presico Engineering Pte Ltd was awarded a contract to develop the charging system at Gali Batu bus depot.
The LTA states that it expects half of our bus fleet to be electric by 2030, and that it is committed to deploying a fleet comprised entirely of cleaner energy vehicles by 2040. It additionally states that more tenders for electric buses and infrastructure upgrades to support their operation and maintenance will be called in the coming years.
