15 Oct 2014|4,746 views
The all new Mazda2 hatchback (also known as the Demio in Japan) has been voted as Japan's Car Of The Year (COTY). The Japanese hatchback had earned 423 votes, 19 more than the Mercedes C-Class and 83 votes higher than third place winner - the groundbreaking BMW i3. The Subaru Levorg and Suzuki Hustler finished fourth and fifth respectively with 124 and 65 votes each.
The result has allowed Mazda and its acclaimed SkyActiv technology as well as unique styling combination to be conferred with Japan's top award twice in three years, after the CX-5 snagged the COTY trophy in 2012.
In a tightly fought contest, the Mazda2 received the maximum ten votes from 22 out of the 59 jurors while the C-Class picked up ten votes from 18 jurors. Each juror is allocated 25 votes - where he must award ten votes to their best car and spread the remaining 15 votes amongst the next best four cars.
In three minor award categories that were introduced last year, the BMW i3 picked up the 'Innovation Award' and the Honda N-WGN captured the 'Small Mobility Award' while the 'Special Achievement Award' was presented to Toyota for its Fuel Cell program.
