The British sports carmaker claims that the MP4-12C GT3’s improved aerodynamics and light weight compensate for the decrease in power. The V8 engine is mated to a six-speed sequential gearbox, which is 80 kg lighter than the road car's 7-speed box. Additionally, the race car gets a race-spec suspension setup, and the MP4-12C GT3 was aerodynamically-tuned in the same simulator as the McLaren Formula One team.
“The 12C GT3 will be supplied with the 12C’s carbon MonoCell and the same steering wheel design employed by Lewis Hamilton in his MP4-24 Formula 1 car,” said Martin Whitmarsh, CEO McLaren Group, who added, “We are working closely with Formula 1 suppliers past and present: Akebono, Mobil 1, McLaren Electronic Systems, Ricardo and Michelin for example. This blend of road car and Formula 1 technology and experience will be a great advantage to anyone racing a 12C GT3 in 2012.”
2011 will be a development season for the McLaren MP4-12C GT3, with the car to be given outings at the Blancpain Endurance Series race at the Circuito de Navarra in Spain, followed by Magny-Cours and Silverstone. McLaren also plans to enter the car at the 24 Hours of Spa endurance race, as well as showcasing it at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. The three drivers that will assist with developing the MP4-12C GT3 will be Andrew Kirkaldy, Oliver Turvey and Alvaro Parente. 20 cars will subsequently be produced and sold to customer teams for racing in the GT3 class in 2012.

The MP4-12C GT3 racer uses the same 3.8-litre twin-turbo V8 engine as the road-going MP4-12C, but the GT3 produces only 500bhp, a reduction of 100bhp from the road car. The power decrease is to “provide optimum power for a performance-balanced race car,” according to McLaren.
