Inside, the MINI Coupe retains the hatchback’s dashboard design layout, with the addition of new colours and materials. The removal of the rear seats means that the MINI Coupe has a larger boot capacity, at 280 litres, and which can be accessed from both the driver and the passenger seat. MINI has also included larger door bins, three cup holders and a cross-rack behind the seats for improved practicality.
MINI will offer the Coupe with a choice of three 1.6-litre four-cylinder petrol engines, with the naturally-aspirated base Cooper variant producing 122bhp. The turbocharged Cooper S model churns out 184bhp, while the top-of-the-line John Cooper Works version coming up with 211bhp. MINI is also offering a diesel version, with the MINI Coupe Cooper SD powered by a 2.0-litre turbo diesel with 143bhp.
The MINI Coupe is a strict two-seater, and is conceptualised as a sportier version of the standard MINI hatchback. The Coupe was first previewed as a concept in 2009, and the design has remained mostly unchanged, with its backwards “helmet roof” design and the sharply raked A-pillars. The MINI Coupe also sits 52mm lower than its three-door hatchback counterpart, and features an active rear spoiler that extends automatically at 80km/h to optimize airflow at highway speeds.
