The Mini John Cooper Works WRC Team, to give its full name, will get its first taste of rallying action at the Rally d'Italia in May, in the first of its planned six outings for the 2011 World Rally Championship season.
The team, which is run by Prodrive, the same company behind Subaru's successful WRC rally programme in the 1990s, has also confirmed its drivers for the season, with Briton Kris Meeke partnering Spaniard Dani Sordo for the six events.
Aside from the Rally d'Italia, which will be held from 5-8 May, the Mini WRC team will also contest rallies in Finland, Germany, France, Spain and Great Britain. The team has decided to skip the events in Argentina, Greece and Australia.
Dr Wolfgang Armbrecht, MINI's senior vice president of brand management, said: "Our colleagues in England continue to oversee the development of the MINI John Cooper Works WRC. When you add the turbocharged MINI engine and the BMW Group's expertise in the world of [motorsport] to the mix, you can see we have an exceptional blend of attributes which will take us quickly to the next stage. The car's technical make-up and driving characteristics make it the perfect fit for rallying. Entering the WRC takes MINI back to its rally roots and brings this heritage right up to date."
