Video cameras will be installed on new buses to keep check of the bus lane during operating hours. The announcement by the Land Transport Authority (LTA) came on Thursday, adding that traffic wardens will continue to be stationed to ensure that the priority lane remains clear.
Currently, more than 3,000 buses have been fitted with video cameras to monitor the road ahead. This system was first tested on 90 buses in 2008.
With enhanced enforcement, motorists caught for driving in bus lanes during restricted hours have decreased from 2,112 in 2008 to 1,560 in last year.
The LTA also said that it will expand the use of bus lanes and the Mandatory Give Way to Buses scheme to help reduce journey times. Up to 300 bus stops will implement the scheme by end of this year.
