In 1994, McLaren stunned the world when it announced that its F1 supercar could actually hit 371.8 km/h.
So, the Guinness Book of World Records awarded the title to McLaren. And, they held the title until 2005, when Swedish upstart Koenigsegg introduced its CCR™which had an unheard of top speed of 387.3 km/h.
Two months later, VW's Bugatti brand launched the famous Veyron. With a top speed of 408.4 km/h, everyone thought that Bugatti would hold the title indefinitely.
However in October 2007, American upstart Shelby Super Cars captured the title with their Ultimate Aero TT. Although it wasn't exactly a pretty car, it could do an astounding 412 km/h, which was good enough to take the title from a stunned Bugatti.
The world's biggest carmaker fired back in 2010 with the Veyron Super Sport.
Using a straight on the VW test track in Germany, Bugatti test driver Pierre Raphanel piloted a carbon and orange Veyron Super Sport to a top speed of 431 km/h, reclaiming the title for Bugatti.
Not to be outdone, SSC hired the famed automotive designer Jason Castriota to pen a body for their latest Bugatti killer - The Ultimate Aero II.
Although we've seen the car since it was introduced. We never knew much about it. Until now™
The SSC Ultimate Aero II is powered by a 6.8 litre V8, with two turbos, and a 9,000 rpm redline. This potent powerplant is said to produce 1,350 horsepower. Which is 150 more ponies than the Veyron Super Sport.
The Ultimate Aero II tips the scale at a mere 1,181 kg's. Far less than the Super Sport's 1,888 curb weight.
This is partly due to serious weight saving measures. Which include carbon fibre wheels that weigh just 5.9 kg's each.
SSC says that its new supercar is good for a top speed of 442 km/h. However, we'll believe that when they find someone brave enough to try.
