As reported in The Straits Times, since the inception of the Bus Service Enhancement Programme (BSEP) in September 2012, the number of services with persistent peak period crowding has fallen by more than 90 percent. This latest update on the Government's S$1.1 billion bus improvement programme was released by the Land Transport Authority (LTA) on Friday.
A 'crowded' bus is when bus loading, including standing and seated passengers, exceeds 95 percent.
As of July, about two-thirds of the 1,000 Government-funded buses have entered the service. This has resulted in 168 bus services - about 60 percent of all bus services in Singapore - being improved, said the LTA. The rest of the new buses are expected to enter the service by 2017.
This latest update was announced by Transport Minister Lui Tuck Yew at the Serangoon Integrated Bus Hub on Friday, and he said that the Government will continue working hard fo the rest of the BSEP roll out.
