Photogrammetry represents an improvement in measurement efficiency on the production line in terms of speed and precision.

Photogrammetry is helping Seat deliver a new level of precision in its production lines.

The measurement of bodywork on cars, a crucial part of the process to ensure manufacturing quality, is traditionally carried out semi-manually. With the adoption of photogrammetry, inaccuracies that measure tenths of a millimetre across can be picked up and rectified.

Photogrammetry is a pioneering and innovative process in the industry and represents an improvement in measurement efficiency on the production line in terms of speed, precision and connectivity.

Seat randomly selects components off the assembly line to be thoroughly checked during each production shift. Automated robots transport these components to measuring facilities. There, camera-equipped photogrammetry machines begin the work to ensure that all vehicles leaving the production line have the correct dimensions.

The process involves taking between 200 and 300 photos per assembly, which measures the equivalent of a total seven million points per vehicle. Photogrammetry reduces the time spent on taking measurements by up to 90%.

This technique is currently being replicated on the assembly line of the Seat Leon and the Cupra Formentor.
