Porsche has revealed the new Porsche 911 GT3 R rennsport. Designed for track use, only 77 examples of the special car are set to be built.
The Porsche 911 GT3 R rennsport is based on the 911 GT3 R and retains the aerodynamically optimised geometry of the 911 GT3 R's nose, including its cooling air intakes and ducts as well as its bonnet and roof. However, the rest of the body has been altered, making nods to Porsche's extensive motorsport history while sporting all the modern elements of a high-performance competition car.
These changes include the redesigned air intake and outlet panels of the front wheel arches, as well as the elimination of the wing mirrors for digital replacements. But the most prominent change is at the rear, where a wing said to be inspired by the one on the Brumos Porsche 935/77 now sits. The car also gets an LED light bar that incorporates the illuminated Porsche lettering at the rear.
And of course, this rear also houses the engine of the 911 GT3 R rennsport. Not restricted by the requirements of motorsport homologation, Porsche has taken the 4.2-litre six-cylinder boxer engine of the 911 GT3 R here to a new peak power output of 612bhp.
All this power is sent to the rear wheels through a sequential six-speed constant-mesh gearbox that is also borrowed from the 911 GT3 R with only minor modifications. Gear changes are made via steering wheel paddles that control an electronic gearshift actuator.
Also taken from the 911 GT3 R is the suspension design, which utilises a state-of-the-art double wishbone suspension layout while multi-link suspension design is employed at the rear. The system utilises five-way adjustable racing shock absorbers from KW.
Porsche states that the car shown in the pictures sports a 'Rennsport Reunion Design' that uses traditional motorsport colours in a wave that flows across the car in a manner similar to the legendary Corkscrew corner at Laguna Seca, the venue chosen for the world premiere of the 911 GT3 R rennsport.
Customers will be able to opt for their car with a bodyshell painted in Agate Grey Metallic and bodywork in pure carbon, or in a total of seven colours. Two more exclusive paintwork designs available also available on top of the Rennsport Reunion Design.
