No technical data was issued. Just a simple press release, with data on Porsche's other hybrid efforts. Like the 911 GT3 hybrid race car.
The lack of details is perplexing, especially given the fact that Mercedes and Audi are preparing to launch their own electric sports cars - the Mercedes SLS E-Cell, and Audi R8 e-Tron.
Maybe Porsche is trying to test the public's reaction to™an electric Porsche?
A quote from the press release says; In the test process, these three electric Boxsters are to provide an initial first important insight into new electric drive components and battery systems for all-electric vehicle drive. This field test intended to also provide further findings on the infrastructure required for electromobility, user behaviour and the demands made of future products..".
No further details about the test were provided either.
Now, since Porsche is made by the German's. You know that any new model will be subjected extensive testing. That way it "will be perfect" when it goes on sale (unlike that other electric sports car™the Tesla Roadster).
So, if anybody can make an exciting electric car, it's Porsche. But do we really want one?
There'll be no blood-curdling exhaust note, when you drop a gear, and sail past the speed limit. Just a slight WRRR from the tires.
Sure, you'll be moving along™at a very rapid pace. But where's the mechanical interaction? Where's the screaming exhaust note to let you know that you've exceeded the speed limit?
Hopefully, they'll give us a CD with some flat-six noises on it.
