A hike of 3.2 percent on the current bus and train fares has been approved by the Public Transport Council (PTC) and will take effect from 6th April this year.
Adult fares for buses and trains will increase by four to six cents per journey. Fares for senior citizen will increase up to three cents per journey, while students will pay two cents more.
Adult fares for trains and buses paid in cash will increase by up to 20 cents per trip, while those for senior citizens and students on concession will go up by 10 cents per trip.
The last fare adjustment was in October 2011. The 2012 adjustment exercise was put on hold as a new fare formula was in the works by the Fare Mechanism Committee, which includes an energy component to take rising costs as part of the consideration.
This round of fare adjustment, hence, was combined with that for the previous year.
