SMRT Corporation Ltd scored a first for Singapore with its decision to order 66 units of Mercedes-Benz City Buses that meet the stringent EURO 5 emissions standard. This initiative was announced at the launch event of the "SMRT Is Green" campaign.
It underscored SMRT Corporation Ltd as the first public transport fleet operator in South East Asia to operate buses with EURO 5 emission standard, which reduce nitrogen oxides, particulates and emissions as well as satisfying the emission standards of tomorrow.
On SMRT's acquisition of Mercedes-Benz City Buses, Dr Rainer Thiel, President and CEO of Daimler South East Asia says "Mercedes-Benz offers state-of-the-art diesel drive systems that are economical, powerful and also the cleanest in the world. SMRT has set the benchmark in South East Asia by being the first public transportation company to boost its new fleet of buses with Mercedes-Benz BlueTec diesel technology featuring SCR (selective catalytic converter) exhaust treatment, which significantly reduces emissions of nitrogen oxides and particulates.
We congratulate SMRT for playing a pioneering role in contributing to environment protection. It is an investment in the future, by using engines and exhaust technology which offer improved performance, low emissions and lower fuel consumption. "
Since October 2006, all Mercedes-Benz buses have BlueTec technology as standard in its model series. The BlueTec diesel technology has been developed from a combination of extensive engine improvements and SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) technology. In simplified terms, the engine is configured for optimal combustion characteristics, thereby achieving low particulate emissions combined with lower fuel consumption.
Reduction of the nitrogen oxides from the combustion process into water and nitrogen is carried out in the downstream SCR by adding the aqueous reducing agent AdBlue. The SCR technology allows a significant reduction of nitrogen oxide emissions, which are regarded a major source of air pollution related problems.
