Stellantis EV battery plant reaches 30% completion

Just weeks after the Volkswagen Group announced that its new Gigafactory in St. Thomas, Ontario, Canada is now prepared for groundbreaking and the start of construction, Stellantis has now announced that a 393,000sqm battery plant in Windsor, Ontario, has seen the raising of its last structural steel beam.
The site, the product of a collaboration between the Stellantis-owned NextStar Energy and LG Energy Solution, is said to now be 30% complete, with the work-to-date having been performed by a 100% Canadian crew of 950 craft workers. The project is additionally said to be on track to see its first phase of operations - modular battery production - begin in the first half of 2024.
Stellantis states that the facility will be Canada's first large-scale, domestic, electric-vehicle battery manufacturing facility, and aims to achieve an annual production capacity of 49.5GWh. This production of lithium-ion battery cells and modules will represent 40% of Stellantis' electric-vehicle production requirements in North America. Stellantis is committed to have electric vehicle comprise more than 50% of its vehicle sales in the U.S.A and Canada by the end of the decade.
