Nissan's hallowed motorsports division, NISMO, is going electric.
And if you weren't convinced of this before, the revelation of this car should hammer the reality in more concretely than ever: The all new Nissan Ariya NISMO. The car was unveiled at the Tokyo Auto Salon 2024, which took place earlier this year, in mid-January.
The Ariya marks Nissan's first all-electric SUV, as well as its second bespoke EV after the Leaf. Previewed, but not properly launched yet in Singapore, the car has gone to battle alongside the likes of the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Tesla Model Y in other international markets.
The 'base' Ariya had already boasted some interesting tech from Nissan on the basis of full-electrification. The dual-motor variants, in particular, were the ones to watch, relying on Nissan's e-4ORCE system (also utilised by the X-Trail e-POWER on sale here), which electronically manages power delivery and braking to each individual wheel to give a driver more control.
On its own, the e-4ORCE system had already promised some level of dynamism and sportiness. But the Ariya NISMO takes things up a few notches, with Nissan claiming that the performance SUV will deliver "greater performance and peace of mind... brought about by NISMO's exclusive tuning".
As to where that tuning has gone into, each chassis component has apparently undergone some extra work. Additionally, peak output of the Ariya's motors has been bumped up by approximately 10%.
Two pre-homologation variants have been announced so far. The Ariya NISMO B6 e-4ORCE will be powered by a 66kWh battery pack, and boast 270kW (362bhp) and 560Nm of instant torque from its two motors.
The B9 e-4ORCE, on the other hand, will get a 91kWh battery pack, with its dual motors zapping out 320kW (429bhp) and a whopping 600Nm of instant torque. Interestingly, while the B6 variant's height has been fixed at 1,655mm, the B9's height is currently stated within the range of 1,650mm to 1,660mm.
Other extra goodies promised for the Ariya NISMO include dedicated tyres, an exclusive NISMO driving mode, and specially designed NISMO seats and trims.
Nissan has invested significantly into its Formula E team in recent years, and here, it's also interesting to see where that expertise has been applied. Apparently, race-derived technologies have been applied to the car's body to improve aerodynamic performance - with reduced drag and greater downforce at higher speeds.
Finally, it's worth pointing out that Nissan doesn't seem to have just paraded it around as a show car too. The brand says the Ariya NISMO should launch in Japan "this spring".
