"Camry will be a significant contributor to the Australian and Victorian economies, and holds the key to a strong future for the local automotive sector," said Toyota Australia senior executive director sales and marketing, David Buttner, who added, "In addition to local sales, Camry will be exported to more than 12 countries, including Saudi Arabia, other Middle East countries and New Zealand, earning export sales revenue well in excess of $1 billion a year."
The Camry is available in Australia with a new 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. In the base Altise trim, the engine produces 178bhp and 231Nm of torque, while the more upscale Atara versions get twin exhausts and a boost up to 181bhp and 235Nm of torque. Toyota will add a hybrid version of the new Camry some time in 2012.
The Australian version of the Camry is similar to the one launched in North America, with the exception of a few minor changes in interior fabrics, colours, trim, as well as steering and suspension settings that were adapted for the Australian market. The Australian Camry will be produced in Melbourne, with the factory also exporting the new Camry, mainly to the Middle East region.
