Tan Yang Chin, was involved in a hit-and-run accident at 1:14am along the East Coast Parkway (ECP), on 7th February 2013, which resulted in a taxi turning over, injuring three people.
According to The Straits Times, Tan was speeding along the ECP when he hit the centre divider after falling asleep. Tan veered his car towards the extreme left lane and hit the back of Mr. Goh Chee Kwang's taxi. Mr. Goh lost control of his taxi and hit the road barrier - causing the cab to overturn. At the time, Mr. Goh, was ferrying two female passengers to the airport.
Tan, who was under a year-long driving ban, left the scene and abandoned his car about one kilometre away. Both vehicles sustained heavy damage, while one female passenger was conveyed to hospital after suffering a fracture to her pelvis.
Hearing the case, District Judge, Low Wee Ping, labelled Tan a 'ultimate road terror' and revealed that Tan was fined and sentenced to a year-long ban since April last year for drink driving. It is believed Tan drove at least four times before his ban ended.
For his reckless action, Tan was jailed for 13 months and barred from driving for eight years - after admitting to causing grievous hurt to the 28-year old taxi passenger, driving under a ban, and failing to render assistance. During his hearing, two charges of causing hurt to the taxi driver and the other passenger as well as failing to stop after the accident were also considered.
