Volkswagen looks for talents to compete in new Scirocco R Cup

The concept of the new racing series enriches the motorsport scene in several ways: for the first time, the same race will see junior drivers and seasoned campaigners supported by Volkswagen dealers as well as international racing legends and celebrities compete against each other.

They will contest the series in the racing version of the new Volkswagen Scirocco R which is powered by bio-CNG (bio-compressed natural gas) and reduces CO2 emissions by 80 per cent compared with conventional concepts, thus marking another premiere in racing. Talented drivers aged 17 to 24 will have the chance to secure one of the ten coveted cockpits in the junior cup at the Motorsport Arena Oschersleben.

While the Bio-CNG Scirocco with a TSI engine and DSG gearbox, which sets new standards as an eco-friendly racing car, is currently being produced as a small-volume series, the juniors will compete in the Volkswagen Polo at Oschersleben.

The 150-hp racer served as the "teaching equipment" of the touring car school from 2004 to 2009. The evaluation criteria used to qualify the candidates for participation in the successor series are not limited to on-track performances which are assessed in various practice units and tests. The course schedule also includes flags, individual interviews and presentations by the participants for media and sponsors. In addition to Chief Instructor Benedikt große Darrelmann and long-standing Cup Coordinator Hans Top, Motorsport Director Kris Nissen will carefully examine the New Year group.

Furthermore, the participation in the two-day evaluation course, for which a fee is charged, encompasses the qualification for the A-licence of the DMSB (Deutscher Motorsport Bund).
