Volkswagen has embarked upon its largest renewable energy project to date with a new collaboration with wind farm specialist wpd Onshore Aldermyrberget AB in Skelleftes.
The new project will see Volkswagen supporting a share of a wind farm in North Sweden. The firm’s share generates some 100GWh of electricity, or enough for 27,000 households.
Volkswagen is supporting the expansion of renewable energies on an industrial scale with a plan to drive expansion of European wind farms and solar plants with around $61 million up to 2025.
The move is also said to increasing the amount of electricity from renewable energy sources available in the grid, and thus improve the climate footprint of the all-electric ID. family and creating the basis for the net carbon neutral use of its electric fleet.
Besides the wind farm in Sweden, a new solar plant in Tramm-Gothen in North East Germany will go online at the beginning of 2022. The joint project with the energy company RWE has around 420,000 solar modules and is the largest independent solar project in Germany.
It will be followed by about 20 further green electricity projects in countries such as Spain, the U.K., and Finland by 2025. All the projects are to generate a combined total of some seven terawatt hours of additional green electricity, equivalent to the capacity of more than 300 wind turbines and could cover the annual consumption of 600,000 households.
