Volkswagen is celebrating a groundbreaking milestone in its journey towards with electrification, with the delivery of its two-millionth battery-electric vehicle (BEV) to a customer.
The car, a Volkswagen ID. 3, was handed over to its lucky new owners at the brand’s Transparent Factory in Dresden. Interestingly, however, Dresden isn't where the ID. 3 is produced; the electric hatchback calls Volkswagen's Zwickau plant home instead, where the likes of the ID. 4 and ID. 5 are also produced for the European market.
The ID. 4, ID. 3, and ID. 7 have been highlighted as the key drivers for Volkswagen's latest electric milestone - though the brand also notes that its electrification journey began all the way back in 2013
Speaking of the ID. 4, Volkswagen has specifically highlighted its first electric SUV as a "key growth driver for the brand", helping it expand its presence in global BEV markets.
Along with its coupe-SUV twin, the ID. 5, the model accounts for nearly half Volkswagen's two-million unit milestone - with approximately 901,000 vehicles delivered to date. Volkswagen notes that apart from Germany and other European countries, the most important sales markets for the model include China and the U.S.A.
But the ID. 3 hasn't performed too shabbily on its own either.
As the first model to ride atop of Volkswagen's EV-specific MEB platform, the hatchback was also responsible for ushering in the brand's new electric era, and has amassed an impressive 628,000 deliveries to date. Volkswagen has already given the car a mid-life facelift, but yet another update is set to arrive soon, with the brand stating: "A further product upgrade of the ID.3 will soon be launched."
The ID. 4 and ID. 5 alone have contributed to nearly half of this latest milestone, with approximately 901,000 deliveries amassed thus far
The last of the three primary models that Volkswagen has credited is the ID. 7 family, comprising the ID. 7 sedan and ID. 7 Tourer wagon. In combination, the two models have seen approximately 132,000 deliveries to date. Volkswagen has specifically heralded the twins as symbols of "technological progress in the ID. family", noting their long ranges, and high level of efficiency and comfort.
In case you've forgotten, however, Volkswagen's electric journey started way before the ID. 3. Back in 2013, it had already launched the Volkswagen e-up! and e-Golf – all-electric variants of its bestselling up! and Golf hatches respectively. These earlier models also count to its two-million unit sum.
Interestingly, however, no mention was made by Volkswagen of the smiley ID. Buzz - which arguably serves as its halo electric model in a number of markets.
Looking ahead, Germany's biggest carmaker is set to launch four new electric cars throughout 2026. The launch lineup will start with the Volkswagen ID. Polo, its first entrant into the compact electric segment that will also debut the MEB+ platform.
