Volkswagen has unveiled the latest iteration of its highly successful compact MPV, the Touran. The new car will be the first MPV to be built on the highly versatile Modular Transverse Matrix (MQB) platform, and will feature a range of new engines, which are up to 19 percent more fuel efficient than their predecessors. For instance, the Touran 1.6 TDI, when coupled with the DSG dual-clutch transmission, returns a fuel economy of 24.4km/L.
Available in five and seven-seat configurations, the new Touran will boast the largest luggage space in its class. The MPV is now 130mm longer, with 113mm added to the wheelbase for a more spacious cabin.
There is also a total of 47 storage compartments on board for greater utility. Despite the added dimensions, the new Touran has shed up to 62kg in weight. It will also come with a newly developed fold-flat seat system, which is highly versatile and extremely easy to configure.
In terms of safety, the Touran has a crash-optimised body, which uses high-strength steel, resulting in an increase of 25 percent in the static stiffness of the body structure.
Other safety features include a total of nine airbags and a pioneering range of new assistance systems in this class, such as Automatic Post-Collision Braking System, Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) system, Front Assist with City Emergency Braking, Traffic Jam Assist, Pre-Crash proactive occupant protection, Side Assist with Rear Traffic Alert, etc.
To enhance user experience, the Touran will also come with a new spectrum of infotainment systems, such as MirrorLink, Apple CarPlay and Google Android Auto.
