Volvo Cars and Northvolt have announced that their new battery manufacturing plant will be located in Gothenburg, Sweden.
Built as part of a new collaboration and investment of approximately $4.4 billion, the new plant will commence operations in 2025, producing state-of-the-art battery cells designed for use specifically in the next generation of electic Volvo and Polestar cars.
The plant will have a potential annual cell production capacity of up to 50GWh, which would supply batteries for approximately half a million cars per year.
The two firms states that the location was selected as it offers benefits in terms of a direct route into Volvo Cars' largest car plant, access to infrastructure, and a strong pipeline of renewable energy supply and relevant job competences, as well as proximity to both Volvo Cars' and Northvolt's research and development units.
The two firms will also open a new research centre, which will become operational in 2022, which will position Volvo Cars as one of the few automotive brands to make battery cell development and production part of its end-to-end engineering capabilities.
