A 53-year old driver was arrested yesterday after leaving a scene of carnage along the Ayer Rajah Expressway (AYE) at 8:00am.
The car continued on its path of destruction, crashing into a motorcycle, sending its rider and pillion rider flying in the air. The mayhem was captured on an in-car camera and witnessed by several motorists. In the video footage, the rider is seen picking himself up and rushing to his injured pillion rider. Both, aged 34, were rushed to the National University Hospital with Mr. Liong's wife.
The Straits Times understands that the Mercedes-Benz was moving along the AYE when it reversed about 500m before the Tuas Checkpoint. It made a three-point turn and then headed in the opposite direction, occupying the right lane. A separate in-car camera caught the same Mercedes speeding along the right lane, in the wrong direction, near the Tuas West Road exit.
Procurement officer Rozaidy Mokhtar, 31, was driving along that stretch when he saw the car moving 'at a very high speed'. He swerved left to avoid it but others were not as lucky. Mr. Rozaidy saw in his side mirror that a black Mazda, that had also turned sharply to the left to avoid the Mercedes-Benz, had hit a tour bus. Motorists said they then heard several loud crashes.
Mr. Rozaidy gathered from other eyewitnesses that the impact of the head-on crash with the Toyota was so great that it sent the smaller car skidding to the left-most lane before it landed on its side.
The driver of the Mercedes-Benz, who was not named, was arrested for causing death by a rash act and was also taken to the hospital. If found guilty, his maximum penalty is five years' jail and a fine. Police investigations are ongoing.
