Dyson has confirmed that a decision to construct its first advanced automotive manufacturing facility in Singapore has been ratified. The bespoke two storey manufacturing facility is scheduled for completion in 2020. Dyson revealed that it had been working on an electric vehicle in September last year.
Singapore was chosen due to its proximity and access to high-growth markets, ready access to a supply chain of advanced materials and components, and the availability of highly-skilled engineers and and scientists.
Dyson's history in Singapore first started 11 years ago, and it currently employs 1,100 people across its new Singapore Technology Centre at Science Park One, and its Advanced Manufacturing Centre at West Park, where it manufactures 21 million motors for its electronic products every year.
The project demonstrates the international nature of Dyson's operations. Earlier this year, Dyson announced it was in the process of investing $358 million in new buildings and testing facilities at its campus at Hullavington Airfield in the U.K. It continues its $4.5 billion investment in new technology globally.
On the decision on the location to make the Dyson electric vehicle, Jim Rowan, Chief Executive of Dyson said, "Our Research, Design and Development teams at both the Singapore Technology Centre and the Advanced Manufacturing Centre have developed world-leading knowledge and represent Dyson at its best. Singapore is central to our future and we expect to more than double our team there."
The construction of the Singapore plant will begin by the end of this year, and is set to complete by 2020.
