German cars with engineering, Japanese cars for money value, and French cars carrying the usual french-flair. Older French automobiles, for instance, had some innovative styling and engineering features. However they dont stand out or scream sexy like their Italian counterparts like Alfa Romeo or Ferrari. All that might change thanks to a new Citroen.
The current Citroen DS range is set to expand with a new flagship, Numero 9 (DS9). Spy shots have been floating around the web since last month, but Citroen has released images and details ahead of its debut next week at the Beijing Motor Show, where the rest of the DS family is will be introduced to the Chinese market.
This concept, is one of three DS models Citroen will preview, the other two being a small saloon and an SUV. While the DS family has mainly adopted a hatchback styling the DS9 has followed the likes of the Bugatti Galibier, Ferrari FF, Fisker Surf and Porsche Panamera with a low, wide yet extremely striking shooting brake design with styling cues borrowed from the 2010 Metropolis concept.
The stealthy wide 3D effect grille and full LED headlights pair up well for a neat flush design. An extremely thin spoiler and turbine alloys adds style and improves aerodynamic efficiency. At 4.9 metres, it’s the same length as a Panamera, but wider, lower, and providing a longer wheelbase with plenty of room for rear occupants. The heart of the DS9 is a turbocharged 225hp 1.6-Litre petrol or diesel engine to drive the front wheels and a 70hp electric motor with a torque output of 200Nm, fueled by a lithium-ion battery pack, for the rears, a similar approach used by BMW in the i8.
Charging the batteries takes 3.5 hours through a standard socket, with almost 48km of electric-only range. A boost function switches the car to all-wheel drive mode, producing a total of 295hp, and launching the car in a quick 5.4 seconds to 100km/h. The DS9 will max out at 244km/h with an impressive fuel economy of 1.7L/100km.
