Can't find these high-performance models? Check out these alternatives
05 Aug 2022|12,734 views
High-performance models such as the BMW 540i and Renault Megane RS may be popular with petrolheads, but you won't find many pre-owned examples listed on Sgcarmart.
Indeed, as discussed in this previous feature, enthusiasts who buy these cars typically hold onto them. They were purchased to be driven and enjoyed, not toyed with and sold off after a few years.
Of course, acquiring one of these models isn't impossible. However, your choices are likely to be limited, and finding a unit in good or even decent condition is going to be a challenge. But if you're willing to compromise, there are alternative models for you to consider.
Hard to find: Lexus GS350
Alternative: BMW 520i
At the moment, there are no GS350 models listed on the website. Forget about the 530i and 540i. There are no listings for these either.
However, there are seven units of the 520i and four units of the more powerful 528i, if you want more oomph.
Now, the 520i may be the base model, but it's not a shabby drive. You get a quiet and smooth-revving motor, rear-wheel drive and BMW's balanced handling.
The F10 5 Series is also larger and more comfortable than the GS, so you'll benefit from the roomier cabin and larger boot.
Power & Performance: 181bhp/270Nm, 0-100km/h in 7.9 seconds.
Availability: Seven units.
Hard to find: Mazda 6 Wagon
Alternative: Subaru Levorg
If you're looking for a fun-to-drive Japanese estate, the Levorg is probably the model to consider.
The Levorg has racy touches like a big bonnet scoop and roof spoiler, and its turbocharged 1.6-litre flat-four is an engine option we wish the Impreza offered.
With firm damping and a chassis that responds well to spirited driving, the Levorg will reward keen drivers. Conversely, it's less happy being driven at three-tenths of its ability - a point worth keeping in mind.
Power & Performance: 168bhp/250Nm, 0-100km/h in 8.9 seconds.
Availability: 11 units.
Hard to find: Mazda CX-5 2.5
Alternative: Toyota Harrier Turbo
The Harrier Turbo is the opposite of the CX-5. While the Mazda needs plenty of revs and is nimbler around corners, the Harrier Turbo is easier to drive and has more effortless performance.
Now, with regard to 'rarity', there are 10 units of the CX-5 2.5 currently listed, so it shouldn't be hard to acquire one. But... what if you can't find the exact colour and specification?
On the other hand, there are nearly five times the number of Harrier Turbos listed on the site, which gives you more options to consider.
Power & Performance: 227bhp/350Nm, 0-100km/h in 9.2 seconds.
Availability: 46 units.
Hard to find: Volkswagen Arteon R-Line
Alternative: Audi A5 Sportback 2.0
If the Arteon has caught your eye, then you've got a penchant for good-looking fastbacks.
But if you can't land an Arteon, the next best alternative is the Audi A5 Sportback, one of the most stylish fastbacks available today. The current-generation model easily outsold the A4 Sedan, and there's no doubt that it's primarily due to the design.
The 190bhp entry-level model is a good start, and the quattro variant, which has 245bhp, is even better. You'll just have to wait for the latter variant to become available.
Power & Performance: 190bhp/320Nm, 0-100km/h in 7.3 seconds
Availability: 46 units.
Hard to find: Kia Stinger 3.3 GT
Alternative: Opel Insignia Grand Sport
The Stinger 3.3 did not sell in large numbers. But as a halo model, it was never meant to. It only had to appeal to those who could appreciate such a car, and who understood what an accomplishment it was (and still is).
Now the Insignia Grand Sport may not be as famous as the Stinger, but it brings a lot to the table. In top-spec Premium Edition guise, its standard kit includes a healthy list of safety and driving convenience features.
The Insignia is also handsomely styled, and offers lots of space for passengers and their belongings. Oh, and the turbocharged 1.5-litre engine means less road tax, too.
Power & Performance: 162bhp/250Nm, 0-100km/h in 9.4 seconds
Availability: Nine units.
Hard to find: Renault Megane RS 1.8
Alternative: Seat Leon Cupra
The Golf GTI is the benchmark hot hatch, but there are petrolheads who prefer a left-field choice like the Megane RS, which offers more power as well as rear-wheel-steering.
But, if for some reason, you feel that the Megane RS still isn't unique enough, then it's time to consider the Seat Leon Cupra (now sold as the Cupra Leon).
This Spanish GTI is more engaging and has more zing than its Wolfsburg cousin. If you're looking for an offbeat option, this could be it.
Power & performance: 286bhp/380Nm, 0-100km/h in 5.7 seconds.
Availability: Five units.
Hard to find: BMW 540i M Sport
Alternative: Maserati Ghibli 3.0
The BMW 5 Series is acknowledged by many as the industry standard when it comes to sporty executive saloons. In 540i guise, it has more than enough performance to satisfy most drivers.
Finding one is an issue, though. Fortunately, if you want six cylinders and rear-wheel drive, there's the Maserati Ghibli to consider.
This Italian executive boasts a striking design and an even more emotive soundtrack, courtesy of its turbocharged 3.0-litre V6. For drivers who want an executive sedan that can stand out in their company carpark, the Ghibli might do the trick.
Power & Performance: 340bhp/450Nm, 0-100km/h in 5.1 seconds.
Availability: 17 units.
