Porsche Cayman GTS PDK 3.4 (A) First Drive Review

Doing things differently comes naturally to those who grace Porsche and we are no exception. Like the luxury sports carmaker, we are searching and yearning for perfection - a ceaseless endeavour that allows us to present works of art to readers like yourself.
With the Cayman GTS, which stands for Gran Turismo Sport, Porsche has created a car that bridges the power and performance gap between itself and the flagship 911. For non-Porschephiles, the Cayman GTS you see here is simply the top-of-the-range version of Porsche's mid-engined two-seater coupe. And by god has this Porsche been tailored and tweaked to perfection.
Up close and Personal
Decked out in matte black front fascia inserts, smoked taillight lenses, aggressive black central twin tailpipes and a set of bigger shoes, the car is easily distinguished from the rest of its siblings, even on first glance.
Despite growing some 24mm in length and sitting 10mm closer to the tarmac compared to the regular Cayman, the car is still relatively compact, with slender good looks and muscular haunches, if you were to compare it with the 911.

Of course, the latter still remains to be the most desirable Porsche to own, but the notion of the Cayman being a poor man's Porsche should, by now, be long gone, considering how 'rich' this car actually is in terms of looks, drive and not forgetting its price tag.
On the inside, the 'GTS' letters are prominent, reminding you of its exceptional character on and off the track. Everything else remains to be Cayman-familiar, with an array of buttons taking centre stage.
Unlike the Cayman R where the deletion of convenience features, such as replacing door handles with red pull straps, had to be implemented to save weight, the GTS model retains all the necessities to ensure functionality and comfort for the driver and passenger.

The Drive
Where this Porsche scores well is its ability to have fun without coming across as an overly heavy and hardcore machine. Accuracy and faithfulness are the keywords for the car's success. From the steering and the cog changes to the throttle response and the brakes, the Cayman GTS forgives and flatters out all your flaws on the track, as this storyteller has experienced first hand.
The crowning glory, needless to mention, is the 3.2-litre flat six that sits nicely behind the rear axle. Mate that to the seven-speed PDK gearbox and, together with the precise steering and ample grip from the tyres, what you get is an addictively fun and intriguingly involving drive.
There's just so much engagement on the track. Bleed off the brakes, turn into a sweeping bend and the car handles itself with a level of poise like no other, feeding this pint-sized driver with high levels of confidence and a heavy dose of satisfaction.

That said, we must be clear. With 340 horses and 380Nm of twisting force from the word go, this sports car will clear the century sprint in 4.8 seconds - not nearly as fast as the 911 Turbo or the Carrera GTS Cabriolet that we sampled on the Sepang International Circuit too.
But in our eyes, fast doesn't necessarily equate to fun and the Cayman GTS gives you a net result of such a balanced chassis on the track that it doesn't intimidate. And that's key, especially when you're gunning down the straights at 250km/h and tackling corners at 125km/h.
Conclusion
This is about as fun a sports car as you can get. It's fun on the track and functional on the road, with the kind of performance that is as remarkable and graceful as Roger Federer serving an ace.
Now if that's not perfect, what is?
