Ode to Studio - Professional car photography for automotive lovers

Starting a business can be a hard nut to crack, more so if you intend to target a niche market to stand out from the crowd. Most people start their businesses through experience and they don't always succeed on their first attempt. They pick themselves up, dust the dirt of their shoulders and start again. Some, on the other hand, allow love and passion to run wild and free, creating fascinating businesses out of hobbies.
Then you have another kind of business start-up where they stumble upon opportunities. They set up booths at events and realise that there's a penchant for what they do. They subsequently take a step into the darkness of the unknown, with guts, in hopes that they'll be able to stand on something solid... or be taught how to fly. You may even consider 'entrepreneurial' to be the suitable word to describe them.
So just who are we talking about here? Well, a couple of days ago, we had the opportunity to meet up with an enthusiastic Jay Ong, the man behind the curtain of Ode to Studio. Stumbling onto the niche idea last September at an event, Jay realised the demands of car lovers and decided to take a leap of faith into the industry, setting up a photography studio catering to cars and bikes. And with its straight-up, funky logo you see here, one can easily identify the genre of what the small company is capable of.
Currently located at Northstar at Ang Mo Kio, the office and studio are located in one entire space, with a massive black curtain separating the two. His office is filled with car photographs and posters, with stacks of automotive magazines evidently displayed on his shelves. In fact, dedicated to one entire bookshelf is 9tro magazine, one of the biggest supporters of Ode to Studio. Brush the massive black curtain by the side and the two-month old studio looks fresh and artistic, giving you the 'raw' feeling worthy of an underground music establishment. It may look dodgy on first glance but do not be too quick to judge. The work produced by the humble guys at Ode to Studio will blow you away.

Ode to Studio provides, primarily, people with pictures of the cars they are selling for memory sake. Derived from Jay's favourite hit music by Cranberries' 'Ode to my Family', Ode to Studio produces pictures like no other at the moment. Unlike other photography works where backgrounds play a huge role, Jay reckons that a plain black background with innovative studio lightings is the way to go.
"I want to ensure the customers get what they want - the beauty of their cars. Studio shoot eliminates reflections on the car which causes it to look very messy," said Jay, the deft owner of Ode to Studio. The details of the cars' sexy curves and bold modified bits are what customers will see when they go for the photography session.
Plus, it doesn't matter if the weather decides to be temperamental. Rain or shine, Jay ensures the shoot carries on. "I reckon it's a win-win situation for our clients. We can shoot at any time of the day as we are not affected by external lightings and it gives our clients time flexibility for the photo shoot. They can even choose to come down at night for the shoot after their busy schedule," added Jay.
It does get more interesting: Unlike the usual family portraits with graduation gowns and tuxedos, families are also stepping out of the box to have shoots at the studio - with their rides. Could it be due to the reasonably priced packages available at Ode to Studio? Ranging from a mere $150 to $400, customers are able to get different generous packages to suit their wants.
Are there any commercial or corporate services?
Looking at his unpretentious studio raging with hunger to spread its name, Ode to Studio also does corporate shoots for companies, commercial shoots for magazines as well as car workshops apart from the day-to-day clients.
Other than the flashy studio lights and cameras, Ode to Studio is also the official dealer of EAT SLEEP RACE, TopGear and Klutch online products in Singapore. Ranging from gearhead apparels to swell key rings, the merchandises sitting in the studio are comprehensive enough to keep your eyes glued to them.
What is the verdict?
This is one photography studio that's worth visiting. A whole lot of passion and love fill the studio. It overwhelms you, telling you that you're in the right place for a photo shoot. With Darren, Charles and Ryan, they form the talented photography team for the studio, providing one of the most astounding yet simple pictures for their clients.
For a young lad like Jay to take a leap into a competitive industry takes a lot of hard work and guts. Based on what he and his team are capable of producing, Jay stands a very good chance in surviving well. After all, if you aren't going all the way, why go at all?
