Shanghai Motor Show focuses on the future of driving

Auto Shanghai, or Shanghai Motor Show as the folks at Sgcarmart like to call it, began 38 years ago in 1985 and like previous years, this year's event brought in about 1,000 exhibitors that covered the massive exhibition area of 320,000sqm.
With a theme of 'Embracing a new era of the automobile industry', the Shanghai Motor Show also features first public appearances for several cars and new car launches from plenty of major brands. But, inevitably with the global move towards electrification, many car manufacturers have announced their latest hybrids and electric vehicles (EV) that will join their current lineup.
Here are some of the interesting models and concepts you should know about:
1. Haval Xiaolong Max
Under Great Wall Motors' (GWM) umbrella, the Haval Xiaolong Max is seen with a rather futuristic frameless grille, boomerang-shaped headlamps and a muscular rear end.
And just as muscular is the car's powerplant. The 1.5-litre turbo engine is capable of 115bhp, with a choice of either a 9.41kWh or 19.27kWh battery pack. This gives the PHEV a combined output of 275bhp and 585Nm of torque. Total electric range of the car is slated to be about 86km.
On the inside, things are similarly impressive. Space is sufficient, materials used as well as fit and finish are on par with the Japanese and the infotainment system isn't shabby to operate.
2. HiPhi Y
Another interesting vehicle at the Shanghai Motor Show is the HiPhi Y. Yet another fully-electric SUV from China, this vehicle is the third production offering after the X SUV and the Y wagon EVs. Thankfully, the Y is less polarising than some of the cars seen at the show.
You get a less complex overall design that's less jarring and harsh to the causal eyes and proportions that are more conventional. But that doesn't mean the car is boring. You can access the rear seats via gullwing and traditional doors at the same time (yes, you read that right), which means ingress and egress problems are now a thing of a past.
More importantly, the HiPhi Y has two power outputs from two different variants. The single-motor rear-wheel drive version produces 247kW (330bhp) while the juicier dual-motor all-wheel drive variant is good for 371kW (495bhp). This allows the car to have a range of over 800km on a single charge.
3. Honda e:N Series
Unveiling the second set of e:N Series EVs at the show strongly signifies Honda's commitment to electrification in the near future. Amongst other electrified products, the e:NP2 as well as the e:NS2 Concepts appearing at the show are based on the new e:N Architecture F platform that promises driving pleasure and a strong unity between driver and vehicle.
On first glance, the concept cars look futuristic, with light strips dominating the front and rear end, low-lung silhouette giving it a sporty look and biggish wheels furnishing it with ample presence. On the inside, things are minimalistic but no less modern. You get a floating centre tunnel, rectangular-shaped steering wheel and an infotainment that's running on the company's e:N OS, a new generation of Honda Connect.
According to Honda, the respective vision of these two models is to create a sophisticated and smart sense of the future as well as an expression for an emotional sense of the future.
4. Nissan Max-Out Concept
This two-seater drop-top EV may give off retro yet audacious vibes, but with its unforgettable and distinctive looks, the Nissan Max-Out Concept has an eye towards the future.
From its long and rectangular grille and litted wheels to its steering yoke and larger-than-life screen, this concept utilises Nissan's e-4ORCE dual-motor all-wheel drive system. The electric motors allow the concept to churn out about 300bhp and 680Nm of twisting force to all wheels from the word go.
Like the Nissan Z Proto, this fun, funky and fresh-looking concept car portrays just what the Japanese carmaker is capable of doing in the future, which signals high engagement for enthusiasts moving forward.
5. Ora Lightning Cat
Something about cats with the brand Ora. It celebrated its recently launched Good Cat EV in Singapore just a month back, and things aren't ending there. We can expect to see the Lightning Cat next.
This EV here in Shanghai comes with either a 150kW (201bhp) or a 300kW (402bhp) and 680Nm of torque variant, aided by an 82kWh lithium-ion battery pack. It looks modern and chic and is obviously larger than the Good Cat, with hints of a Porsche Panamera in front and the Bentley Flying Spur at the back.
Also, the Lightning Cat should be capable of up to 700km of range on a single charge. When the car is arriving in Singapore is still unknown.
6. Polestar 4
We have seen the Polestar 3 in Copenhagen, Denmark, just six months ago, and now in Shanghai, the carmaker has unveiled its next car - the Polestar 4.
This electric coupe SUV is currently the fastest model in its lineup. The dual-motor will have about 540bhp and 686Nm of torque while the single-motor variant is capable of 270bhp and 343Nm of torque available on tap. This rivals cars from Audi, BMW, Maserati and even Porsche.
In terms of styling, there is still the full-width rear light bar like the rest of the current models and it shares similar looks to the Polestar 3, which is a mature and modern look. It may be a tad smaller than the 3, but the 4 looks like it's more road-hugging and certainly more fun to pilot.
7. WEY M81 MPV
Another sub-brand under the GWM umbrella is Wey, and it launched its new large MPV dubbed the M81 at the motor show.
Targeting the luxury MPV market here in China, the M81 resembles the Lexus LM and the Toyota Alphard, and it measures about 5.4m long, with a generous wheelbase of 3.2m. The car is equipped with GWM's Lemon DHT hybrid system and is based on the Coffee Intelligence platform, which is an AI-based system that combines interactive cockpit systems with hybrid driving and smart connectivity.
The PHEV car is equipped with a turbocharged 1.5-litre engine, an electric motor and a 44.5kWh ternary lithium battery pack.
8. Xpeng G6
Several cars on this list in this story may seem irrelevant and unfamiliar to you and me, but with their vast popularity in China, mentioning them seems highly inevitable. The Xpeng G6 is one of those cars.
At over 4.7m long, this car is about the size of the Tesla Model Y, and it also has a similar wheelbase. Best of all, it's also pretty powerful. The car is available in a single-motor rear-wheel drive that makes 218kW (290bhp) as well as an all-wheel drive variant that shoots out 140kW (185bhp) to the front and 218kW to the rear wheels. Both variants, weirdly, has a similar top speed of 202km/h.
According to Xpeng, the range of the cars is expected to be about 750km on a single charge. A maximum charging of just 10 minutes will allow you to have about 300km of range.
9. Zeekr X
Based on the Geely's Sustainable Electric Architecture and offered in two powertrains, the Zeekr X comes after the Zeekr 001 and the 009 models. As with most of the EVs seen here in Shanghai, the car comes with either a single-motor or a dual-motor variant.
The latter comes with a 315kW (420bhp) and 543Nm of torque output, allowing it to complete the century sprint in just 3.7 seconds. The single-motor 200kW (265bhp) variant, on the other hand, covers the same sprint in about 5.8 seconds, which is obviously no slouch either.
In terms of practicality, the Zeekr X offers an option of four or five seats and has a luggage capacity of 362 litres. Knock the rear seats down and space will expand to 1,182 litres.
With a theme of 'Embracing a new era of the automobile industry', the Shanghai Motor Show also features first public appearances for several cars and new car launches from plenty of major brands.
