What the Singaporean petrolhead should and shouldn't do this festive period
24 Dec 2021|1,098 views
It's Christmas, and that can only mean one thing: Mariah Carey is in the midst of collecting her annual royalties.
Just kidding - Christmas is, of course, much more than that: A great time to reunite with your family, to catch up with old pals, to spread cheer through gifting, and to slowly rein everything in and recalibrate as the year comes to a close. As we all dust off ourselves after a chaotic 2021 and fall into a spirit of languorous celebration, here's a short list of 'Do's and 'Don't's for the Singaporean petrolhead!
Do put on a car film or two if you're having some late night gatherings
Movie nights are always fun to get into when the morning after doesn't beckon so urgently, so why not take this festive period of gathering to spread the joy of all things automotive with a film?
Think car films and the over-the-top Fast and Furious franchise instantly comes to mind.
While the series has served as a surprisingly competent showcase of an entire gamut of models that the auto industry has to offer, it's hard not to feel that it veers too often into excess and predictability. In reality, however, tyre-spinning fun knows no limits in terms of genres.
An entire range avails itself to the most diverse and picky of crowds - from the family-friendly Cars franchise by Disney's Pixar Studios, historic rivalry-centered dramas like Ford v Ferrari and Rush, and of course, enthralling heist films like the Mini-filled The Italian Job and Subie-starring Baby Driver.
The JDM-lovers among us may also enjoy watching a teenaged Jay Chou brood and rub his eyes incessantly alongside the AE86 Trueno and FC RX-7 in the big screen remake of anime/manga-series, Initial D.
The rabbit hole is bottomless once you tunnel down into it, but for starters, here are two lists compiled by Vulture and Collider - just scroll through and click away! Besides, if, like the writer, you don't have any friends, you can also always do it alone. Cheers. 😃 (For journalistic integrity purposes, this is a joke.)
Don't hate on your friends who are roping their cars in to get into the mood
Rudolf? Is that you?
Oh - no, it's just another brown Nissan Qashqai.
We get it - some are embarrassed - even repulsed - by the idea of turning their cars into knock-off versions of Santa's best-known helper by sticking a fluffy red ball onto the front grille and cotton antlers onto the sides of the roof.
But let's live and let live, shall we? Since we only have Orchard Road and Spotify to get us into the Christmas mood - and no sub-10 degree weather or snow - it's completely understandable if some of our fellow petrolheads want to ring in the season with a couple of special augmentations for their cars.
For the many who are so inclined, these attachable accessories are available at almost every petrol station around the island, supermarkets, as well as on e-commerce platforms like Lazada and Shopee. And not at a cost that will severely damage your wallet too - not compared to the Christmas shopping you've just done, that is. Cha-ching!
Do check out promotions and deals if the time to switch up your (sleigh)ride is nigh
The festive season is easy fodder for throwing out alluring deals, so it's no surprise too that many of our local dealers have pulled out promotions and special packages for their cars in tandem. As always, these are also coinciding perfectly with the clearance sales that emerge routinely at year-end.
While we do not stand for impulse-buying and overspending, it's more than likely that a few among us are looking to get a new ride anyway. If that happens to be you, drive on over to our New Car Promotions section to find the best deals that suit you!
(Psst… If you've conversely arrived at the painful decision to part with your wheels, we've got you covered too - to take away a bit of the sting and get you more cash back.)
Don't drink and drive
We understand the fun of having some booze out when the spirit of festivity takes hold. But that's no excuse to throw caution to the wind.
Fresh statistics released just this month revealed that more than 1000 drivers had been caught for driving under the influence of alcohol in the first nine months of 2021. That's in spite of the relentless barrage of campaigns - as well as accidents - that we've borne witness to over the years.
Drink or drive - it's one or the other. Even the most ridiculous and exorbitant Grab surge isn't as costly as courting danger. Don't do it. (Seriously.)
Do show your car some love too
'Tis not just the season of jolly gifting, but also the season of highly-anticipated leave clearing after a year of working tirelessly.
It's understandable - you may have just put off that car spa sesh more than once as work piled up from October all the way through early-December. With things slowing down, though, there is perhaps no better time than now to get your precious car back into shape.
Beyond just a standard wash, having a regular rhythm in place for detailing as well as for thorough interior vacuuming ensures that our cars are kept in tip-top condition through the years - inside and out. Ever marvelled at the gleaming coat of a friend's nine year-old car, then stepped inside and wondered how it still feels so fresh? Same here. Now don't keep wondering without doing anything about it.
We've also covered the fact that there are simple routine checks that you can perform without sending your car to the workshop. Regular care and attention can go a long way into, well, making your car go a long way. If you've slipped out of some good practices over the year, wait no further to restart that engine.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all our readers!
Light-hearted jokes and serious notes aside, the baseline remains - it's Christmas! Kick back and celebrate however you like; party through the weekend (safely and legally, of course) with your closest kin, or lock yourself all alone in your room and have an undisturbed 48-hour slumber. After all, it's been a tough year and we all deserve a nice break, our way.
Merry Christmas, and a very, very happy 2022 to all of sgCarMart's loyal readers from all of us here in the Editorial Team! May your cars stay shiny, and may the COE gods bless us with fewer heart-stopping Wednesdays in the new year.
