The 1 October deadline for Malaysia’s VEP is here.
Since it was first announced in May this year, there has been notable challenges met by drivers registering for their VEPs - and with understandable frustration being expressed at the process.
Now that the 1 Oct deadline is here, here's what we know about what happens next:
1. Singaporeans can still enter Malaysia
Malaysian authorities from the Road Transport Department (JPJ) said on 27 Sep that Singaporeans will still be allowed to enter Malaysia, with or without an activated VEP.
A "Warning Notice' will be issued to Singaporean private vehicle owners before leaving Malaysia if they do not have a VEP, however specific details about what form this 'warning notice' will take are unclear.
2. Phased enforcement of VEP
The Malaysia authorities say that VEP enforcement will instead take place "in phases", though specific details about these phases have not been outlined.
Johor Chief Minister Onn Hafiz Ghazi, in a recent visit to a VEP collection centre in Danga Bay, has urged action in resolving the delays to the VEP rollout. This follow a recent statement while speaking at the National University of Singapore Society 70th Anniversary Lecture on 18 Sept where he said he would "personally address" concerns regarding this matter.
3. Four VEP installation centres are available
While immediate enforcement of VEP will not begin, drivers are still advised to register, install and active a RFID VEP tag. There are presently four installation centres available:
- TCSens Office, Danga Bay, Johor Bahru
- South Region JPJ Academy, Johor Bahru
- JPJ Johor Office, Johor Bahru
- VEP Collection Centre, Woodlands
According to the JPJ, 62,635 Singapore private vehicles have activated their RFID VEP tags.
4. What's next?
Given then many drivers have expressed frustration at the complex process and slow response time of registering and obtaining a VEP, it is likely that it will still take time before VEP enforcement fully begins.
While we await additional information and details from the JPJ, drivers who have yet to register for their RFID VEP tag are highly encouraged to do so here.
