46 drivers were stopped at road blocks that were conducted at various locations, and 10 men were arrested for drink driving in an island-wide operation by the traffic police on Friday morning.
The men, aged between 23-year old and 49-year old, were arrested after failing the Breath Evidential Analyser (breathalyser) test. The highest result recorded was 70 microgrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath - twice the prescribed legal limit.
Upon conviction, drink drivers will be disqualified from driving for at least one year and lose their driving licences, reported The Straits Times. First time offenders can be fined between $1,000 and $5,000, while repeat offenders may be punished with a maximum fine of $30,000 and a mandatory jail term of up to three years.
Offenders may also receive up to six strokes of the cane should death or serious injury be caused.
