25-year old, Derrick Tan Jun Quan, was driving along a slip road when he tried to overtake 47-year old Security Officer, Johnny Sim Swee Leng. What should have been a simple overtaking move ended up as a race for the duo on top of speeding at 90km/h at a slip road connecting the Tampines Expressway with a road limit of 50km/h.
As the pair were recklessly crossing lanes without signalling, the wing mirror of Mr Sim's Toyota Yaris clipped 47-year old motorcyclist, Mr Owyong Tak Sung, who got run over after falling off his bike. The motorcyclist died in Changi General Hospital an hour later.
Sim, was jailed for four months and handed a five-year driving ban in June 2012 for driving dangerously and causing Mr Owyong's death on Dec 9th, 2009. Tan, a management and marketing student, pleaded guilty to dangerous driving and was fined $3,000, along with a three-year driving ban.
