Stellantis has announced that the all-new Opel Grandland SUV will be available as the fully electric Grandland Electric, the Grandland Hybrid with 48V technology, and the Grandland PHEV. Putting the latter to the test, the Opel team has come up with results that will likely impress company car and long-distance drivers.
The new Grandland PHEV offers a WLTP range of up to 897km, of which 87km is purely electric. However, Grandland chief engineer Dirk Kaminski is confident that the 'made in Germany' SUV will break the 1,000km mark with a full tank and a full charge. And so, it was trialled under conditions worse than the official test cycle.
While WLTP values are determined at temperatures of around 23°C, the Grandland PHEV, equipped with 19-inch winter tyres and in the fully equipped GS trim, set off in windy and rainy conditions with a temperature of 11°C, with the only requirement being a full tank and a fully charged 17.9kWh battery.
On typical commuter routes including motorway stretches with traffic light stops, all manners of traffic conditions, and country roads, the Grandland PHEV, which offers 143kW (192bhp) and 350Nm of torque, exceeded expectations. At an average speed of 80km/h and an average fuel consumption of 21.7km/l, the SUV achieved a total of 1,115km with a little more than a third of the distance (380km) covered via battery-electric.
Numerous other qualities of the SUV also help to make daily business trips and long journeys even more pleasant: Its ergonomic seats (with the standard Intelli-Seat feature offered on front seats) ensure relaxed driving pleasure. In addition, it has technologies such as the glare-free Intelli-Lux HD light and the Intelli-HUD head-up display.
With these results, Kaminski believes that under optimal conditions, the Grandland PHEV would certainly be able to cover a lot more distance.
