The A3 e-tron Concept is the latest in Audi's long line of e-tron concepts to showcase the Ingolstadt carmaker's green intentions, following the likes of the e-tron Concept Coupe from 2009, the A1 e-tron from 2010, and the e-tron Spyder from earlier this year. The latest A3 e-tron Concept is based on the A3 Sedan Concept that was unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in March, and will be showcased at the Shanghai Motor Show.
The A3 e-tron Concept features a hybrid drivetrain that consists of a 1.4-litre TFSI turbocharged petrol engine with direction injection which produces 211bhp, and an electric motor which churns out an additional 27bhp, for a combined power output of 238bhp. A seven-speed S-Tronic dual-clutch transmission linked to the petrol engine sends power to the wheels.
The electric motor is powered by a set of lithium-ion batteries located behind the rear seats, and provides for a range of up to 54km. Audi says the batteries are charged by the standard energy recovery system when the car moving or it can be charged directly from a household power socket when parked. Audi claims that with the petrol and electric motors working together, the A3 e-tron Concept is able to go from 0-100km/h in 6.8 seconds, and reach a top speed of 231km/h.
Aside from the hybrid powertrain, Audi has also redesigned the concept from the A3 Sedan Concept from Geneva, with the e-tron-specific front grille and alloy wheelsamong the exterior changes, and a new colour scheme for the interior.
