Bentley is marking the production of its last hand-built 6.0-litre W12 at Crewe. The end of production of the engine marks a pivotal chapter in the firm's history as the last W12-powered examples of the Bentayga, Continental GT and Flying Spur roll off the production line.
Bentley states that more than 100,000 examples of its W12 engines have been produced since the engine was introduced in the original Continental GT in 2003. The milestone decision to cease production is in line with Bentley's Beyond100 strategy, which will see it working towards becoming a global leader in sustainable luxury mobility.
Bentley marked the end of production of the W12 engine with a special portrait of the W12 assembly and research and development teams and also presented its assembly colleagues each with a commemorative W12 engine piston
To mark the occasion, a commemorative lunch for the W12 assembly and research and development teams was held at Bentley's Heritage Garage in Crewe. Guests then gathered to form part of a W12 portrait photograph in the Pyms Lane Plaza. Assembly colleagues were also presented with the gift of a commemorative W12 engine piston to cherish the moment.
The W12 is regarded by the firm as the most successful 12-cylinder engine of the modern era. Constant development saw it seeing a 34% increase in total power output, a 54% increase to total torque offered, as well as a 25% decrease to total CO2 emissions during its lifetime.
The W12 engine will be replaced by a new Ultra High Performance Hybrid drivetrain that combines a V8 engine with plug-in hybrid technology. This drivetrain already produces a total of 771bhp and allows the new Continental to post an electric-only range of 81km and is additionally set to do duty in the yet-to-be-revealed new Bentley Flying Spur.
