BMW Group becomes first automotive manufacturer to use new eco-friendly, FSC-approved tyres
22 May 2021|1,089 views
The BMW Group will become the first automotive manufacturer in the world to equip its cars with tyres made from sustainably-sourced rubber and rayon, a wood-based material. The company will source 22-inch tyres exclusively from Pirelli, which will be used in the BMW X5 xDrive45e Plug-in-Hybrid.
The new 22-inch P Zero tyre is the world's first tyre to receive the coveted Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification. To earn this prestigious award, Pirelli adapted its production plant in Georgia, America to produce tyres using FSC-certified rubber and rayon. The tyres are then delivered to the BMW Group's factory in Spartanburg and installed on the BMW X5 Plug-in Hybrid.
BMW's extensive commitment to sustainable production practices enabled the production of the revolutionary tyre. In 2019, the BMW Group joined forces with well-known tyre manufacturers, NGOs, rubber producers and consumers to create the Global Platform for Sustainable Natural Rubber (GPSNR).
Through its activities in the GPSNR and close cooperation with its suppliers, it hopes to steadily enhance its ability to source tyres made from sustainably-sourced rubber.
Beyond its FSC-approved tyres, the BMW Group has also contractually obligated all its primary suppliers to respect human rights, comply with extensive environmental and social standards, and to introduce management systems that bring about these objectives. These requirements must also be met by subcontractors involved in the production of BMW vehicles.
