SMRT bus driver Zhang Kun claimed that seconds before the tragedy happened, the brakes on his bus failed.
Speaking to The Straits Times, Zhang recalled, "The bus suddenly went crazy, and hurtled towards the road barrier. I didn't know what would happen."
"I feel really terrible. I didn't mean to harm anyone. I feel very guilty towards the passenger who lost his life," added Zhang.
The 39-year old Chinese national claimed that the brakes did not seem to work when he slammed on them - seconds before the bus crashed through the central divider.
The accident, which took place on Sunday, killed a 19-year old Malaysian man, who was one of the two passengers on board. The other passenger was injured, and has been discharged from National University Hospital on Monday morning.
Zhang is still warded, and is awaiting surgery for his spinal injuries.
