“The Spark EV offers customers living in urban areas who have predictable driving patterns or short commutes an all-electric option”, said Chevrolet’s global vehicle chief engineer for electric vehicles Jim Federico, who added, “It complements Chevrolet’s growing range of electrified vehicles, including the Volt extended-range EV and the 2013 Malibu Eco with eAssist technology."
Federico further explained that GM’s experience from experimental electric vehicle fleets, such as the Sail EV in Shanghai, the Cruze EV in Korea, and the Beat/Spark EV in India, will help in the development of the new car. “Our global demo fleets continue to provide insight into the needs of electric vehicle customers. The Spark EV is another step in Chevrolet’s plan to provide customers with a variety of electrification solutions to address the lifestyle and transportation needs of people around the world,” Federico said.
The Spark EV will be based on the Chevrolet Beat EV concept unveiled in India earlier this year, and the pure-electric Spark will be produced in limited numbers for selected global and US markets, including California, starting from 2013. The Beat EV concept featured a 20 kWh lithium-ion battery powering a 60bhp electric motor, and provides for a range of 130km. Charging the battery takes less than eight hours using a 240V outlet.
