COE supply to rise for Cat A and E come May 2022, Cat B to dip slightly

Is that the sound of car dealers heaving a sigh of relief? The numbers are finally in, and the supply of Certificates of Entitlement (COE) for the May to July 2022 quota period is set to rise across all car categories except for Cat B.
An average of 3,982 COEs will be available for bidding each month in the coming quarter, a significant jump from the average of 3,482 available in the quarter from February to April 2022, the Land Transport Authority announced on 14 April 2022.
Most notable for us perhaps is that the monthly COE supply for Cat A cars (up to 1,600cc and 130bhp) will rise quite significantly to 1,224, a 15% increase over the current average of 1,062. However, electric cars with a power rating of up to 110kW are set to join this club in the next quota period too.
While rising more gently, COE supply for Cat E will also see an increase in the coming quarter to 379 per month, up from 360 for the February to April 2022 period. COEs in this category can be used for any vehicle type except motorcycles, but end up almost exclusively for bigger cars.

Meanwhile, the COE supply for Cat B (above 1,600cc or 130bhp) will continue its downward trend and average out at 1,053 a month, down from the current average of 1,099.
The final numbers differ quite notably from what we had projected a couple of weeks back, with a sharper rise in Cat A, and a gentler drop in Cat B than what our statistical forecasting had estimated.
Of particular note is the fact that supply in Cat D - which is used for motorcycles - will contribute to the bulk of the increase for the next period. The monthly average for two-wheeler COEs is set to rise by more than 300, or close to 40%. Measures have recently also been put into place to cool the market for motorcycles.
Commercial vehicle COE bidders will also have an average of 205 certificates a month in the next quarter, up from the 152 of this current quarter. The LTA is retaining the current 0.25% per annum vehicle growth rate based on the Category C vehicle population as at 31 December 2021.
The next quota announcement for the bidding period of August to October 2022 will be made in July 2022.
