In 2012, 23 out or 44 fatal pedestrian accidents comprised the elderly - or people above the age of 60 - which is only three fatalities fewer than in 2011.
In a bid to reduce these numbers a Road Safety Concert for the Golden Age was staged on Sunday at Republic Polytechnic, which was attended by up to a thousand elderly citizens. The concert raised awareness on road safety and aimed to educate the attendees on the correct ways to cross the street and provide hand signals.
The event staged multilingual songs and skits - themed around road safety - that were performed by local celebrities including Marcus Chin, Yati and Poobalan.
"Since the population is ageing and there are demographic changes, it's time for us to instill some safety rules to the elderly so they can be safe on the road," said Mr Bernard Tay, Chairman of the Singapore Road Safety Council. Another concert targeting the youth will be held at Woodlands Primary School on May 23rd as part of Road Safety Awareness Month 2013.
Efforts by authorities to reduce the number of fatal traffic accidents involving the elderly have not been fruitful thus far, according to The Straits Times.
