"Not for everyone to like, but for some to love." Since returning directly into the arms of its parent Volkswagen Group Singapore, Spanish marque Cupra has (re)built a name for itself in Singapore with outlandish electric models including the Born hatchback and Tavascan SUV, which arguably bank on unconventional appeal with their bold designs and vibrant cabins.
Now, however, the self-described 'challenger brand' is returning to its combustion-powered roots with the arrival of not just one but three new models simultaneously, which were launched in Singapore on Thursday afternoon (31 July 2025).
The launches of the Cupra Terramar and updated Leon and Formentor in Singapore mark a return for Cupra to its combustion-powered roots
There are a couple of familiar names here that we'll get to in a bit, but let's start with one that is entirely new to the Cupra family: The Terramar.
Measuring 4,519mm long, 1,863mm wide and 1,584mm tall, the Terramar is what we'd refer to as a compact to mid-sized SUV, residing in similar territory to the Volkswagen Tiguan or Hyundai Tucson.
It might be the freshest face among the trio, but Cupra - intriguingly - has made sure to dig deep into its own past to gift the Terramar its identity. The model name pays homage to the Autodrom des Sitges-Terramar, where the Cupra brand was born in 2018.
If you've already gotten acquainted with the Tavascan, the Terramar shouldn't feel too foreign. It bears Cupra's latest design DNA, replete with a 'shark nose' front end, triangular daytime running lights, and a full-width light bar at the rear.
You'll find copper accents all over the interior, the famed 'Cupra' button on the steering wheel, and a freestanding 12.9-inch infotainment touchscreen in the Terramar
Likewise, its interior is fittingly modern, with a dashboard crowned by a freestanding 12.9-inch infotainment touchscreen, and arrow-shaped perforations on all four door cards through which ambient lighting shines through. This SUV even gets front bucket seats wrapped in Dinamica - a suede-like material comprising 73% recycled polyester.
On the flip side of Terramar's sportier outlook, however, is a bucketload of practicality and sensibility.
A 2,681mm wheelbase translates to good leg room for rear passengers, while its 508-litre boot is also commendable for an SUV of its size. What's more, the Terramar is powered by a 1.5-litre turbocharged engine that gets mild hybrid assistance for a dose of fuel efficiency, putting out 148bhp and 250Nm of torque.
The facelifted Leon should be easy to set apart from its predecessor with its shark nose front end; its badge has also moved onto its bonnet
Interestingly, it is this very engine that you'll find under the hood of the next member of the trio: The updated Cupra Leon.
Post-facelift, the hot hatch - which has apparently been bestowed with the title of 'king of Leons' over the years - now greets you with a markedly different front end that links it directly to the Tavascan and Terramar. (Its rear is more familiar, with the most notable updates being its new illuminated Cupra logo and triangular tail lamps.) For a deliciously racy touch, 18-inch 'GARBI' alloy wheels are offered as standard.
The Leon's upgraded cabin additionally comes with the same human-machine interface (HMI) found in the Terramar, which now includes the same free-standing 12.9-inch central infotainment screen. That's not all that has changed though; Cupra notes that the centre console, door panels, dashboard and upholstery are all new, while the Leon also shares the Terramar's supportive yet sustainable bucket seats.
But back to its engine. Against the gutsier 2.0-litre powerplant of its predecessor, the new 1.5-litre mild hybrid engine of the updated Leon undeniably represents a drop in power, yet it offers the hatch a different sort of character that - according to Cupra Singapore - combines efficiency with just enough punch to add excitement to one's daily commutes.
In fact, you might just find this hot (or now warm) hatch to be sharper than before. The Leon now comes with an XDS Electronic differential lock and dynamic traction support, both of which promise to enhance its handling capabilities.
Besides, if it's full-fat combustion-powered performance that you're after, there's always the final member of the trio to look forward to: The new Cupra Formentor VZ. (In case you forgot, 'VZ' stands for 'Veloz', or Spanish for 'fast'.)
Like its latest siblings, the facelifted Formentor now has both the exterior styling chops and interior tech upgrades to help mark it out as a modern member of the Cupra family. You'll note, however, that it arrives in Singapore solely in range-topping 'VZ' guise - meaning that even within the cabin, it can already boast of its own set of exclusive party tricks.
For starters, you'll find a premium 12-speaker Sennheiser audio sound system, which - if we're judging based on our time with the Tavascan VZ - should bring the best out of all your road trip playlists. The Formentor VZ also gets Sabelt Extreme CUP bucket seats up front that are not just pleasing on the eyes, but promise superb support for when you're tackling the twisties.
You might quickly realise the value of these when you consider the performance credentials of this updated Formentor VZ.
Power comes from an upgraded 2.0-litre turbocharged engine that is capable of sending 329bhp and 420Nm of torque to all four wheels, allowing the car to blast from 0 to 100km/h in just 4.8 seconds. Keep your foot to the pedal with an unlimited stretch of tarmac straight ahead, and you'll find the Formentor VZ topping out at an electronically limited 250km/h.
The Formentor VZ has the stopping power to match its speed too, thanks to premium Akebono brakes. Concurrently, an Akrapovic exhaust system promises to bring the best notes out of its 2.0-litre engine.
Also landing with its update are a new Drift mode and torque splitter technology, which should mean more fun regardless of how exactly you want to tackle a bend - either sideways, or with immense traction.
The arrival of the three combustion-powered models now expands Cupra Singapore's portfolio to a five-car strong lineup that the brand believes will better suit a multitude of customer lifestyles - whether they prefer pure combustion power (the Formentor VZ), partial electrification with mild hybrids (the Terramar and Leon), or fully electric cars (the Born and Tavascan).
In case you're keen to catch the new cars up close, but can't find the time to make a trip down to Leng Kee soon, fret not. Cupra Singapore is bringing the trio right into the heart of the city too, with its upcoming roadshow at Suntec City Atrium (Convention Centre) between 4 August 2025 and 10 August 2025, running from 10:00am to 10:00pm daily.
At launch, the Leon, Terramar, and Formentor VZ are retailing at a special price of $209,900, $229,900 and $299,900 respectively, inclusive of COE (prices stated are valid until 31 August 2025). Cupra Singapore is also offering the cars at these prices with an interest rate of 2.28%, and with five years of free servicing, a five-year warranty, and 24-hour roadside assistance bundled in*.
