DEEPAL arrives in Singapore with preview of S07 SUV

There seems to be no shortage of options for those hunting down an electric SUV in recent memory, but if your palate is geared towards something fancier, yet another newly-minted Chinese player may hold the keys to your next car.
First making news of its impending swim to our shores known last December, Changan Automobile sub-brand DEEPAL has finally made its official debut in Singapore. Its arrival was ushered in with the preview of its S07 SUV at the 2025 Singapore Motor Show, which has been confirmed as the first model from the brand here.
A brief primer before we proceed: DEEPAL is said to be an amalgam of 'deep' and 'pal' to symbolise "a deep friendship between humans, technology, and nature". But the brand's name in Chinese (深蓝) probably gives a better idea of the inspiration behind; it translates literally into 'deep blue'.
And while Singaporeans are likely to be most familiar with BYD at this point, state-owned Changan Automobile can actually stake claim to being one of the pioneers of China’s auto industry, and has established itself as one of its 'Big Four' over the decades.
Built atop of Changan Automobile's EPA1 platform for electric vehicles (EVs), the S07 makes quite a good case for the premium electric vision proffered by DEEPAL.
To make things clear first, it's more accurate to think of this as a potential contender to the BYD Sealion 7 (rather than the Atto 3). A 2,900mm wheelbase puts it squarely in mid-sized SUV territory, while its 1,930mm width has been touted by DEEPAL as class-leading.
Furthermore, the S07's power figures will see it land with a Category B COE when launched. A single motor sends 215bhp to the rear wheels, allowing the car to sprint from 0 to 100km/h in 7.9 seconds.
By a different token, the car's claimed range of 475km is commendable by modern standards, with the right DC charger able to bring it from a 20 to 80% state of charge in just 35 minutes. And beyond just range and charging capability, DEEPAL appears to have its sights on longer-term ownership too: It states that the car's iBC digital battery management system will ensure "optimal battery performance, reliability, and thermal safety".
Against the sea of new electric SUVs today, the S07 arguably also stands out with a number of left-of-centre design choices too.
Instead of deferring to softer lines for aerodynamics, for instance, you'll notice this is an SUV that prefers to keep things angular and sharp - and still managing a drag coefficient of just 0.258Cd while at it.
And on the inside, the S07 stands out by drawing inspiration from a luxury yacht, with quilted leather covering the seats, polished wood veneer trim on its doors, and a premium 14-speaker Sony sound system onboard. The car on display at the Motor Show even had electronic door release buttons in place of conventional handles.
There's also the S07's tech-focus. For starters, the car is slated to be equipped with an augmented reality heads-up display that can integrate navigation information, as well as an intelligent voice assistant. DEEPAL states that the driver's headrest has integrated audio capabilities that facilitate phone calls and personalised driving prompts too.
The 15.6-inch infotainment screen Sgcarmart operated on the display car was also particularly friendly: Camera-based sensors ostensibly allowed it to tilt towards whoever was operating it (the driver or front passenger) at a given moment.
Finally, DEEPAL has highlighted active safety as one of the S07's core pillars, with features such as integrated adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist, and a 360-degree camera outlined so far.
While the S07 was only brought out for a preview at the Motor Show, intrigued drivers won't have to wait long to get their hands on it.
Official dealer, Premium Automobiles, has revealed that the DEEPAL showroom will be completed and opened to the public in the same site on 281 Alexandra Road that currently houses the Xpeng showroom (this was previously also Audi Centre), and that pre-orders and test drives will begin even earlier, from mid to late January.
Sgcarmart also understands that barring a massive uptick in premiums, the S07 should be priced below $200,000 at launch, inclusive of COE.
