Since 2000, the safety car has been piloted by Bernd Maylander, a former successful touring car racer. As a safety car driver, he ensures the trail of F1 cars following him have enough pace so that their tyres and brakes do not cool down too much while preventing any accidents or mishaps.
Mercedes-Benz AMG has been entrusted with providing safety cars for the high speed sport since 1996 and the season finale in Brazil this year was the first time a race concluded behind the safety car.
